So I Didn’t Know

Dear Doctor,

This letter is in regard to the question and answer that appeared in yesterday’s Sunday paper.

Unfortunately, the letter writer did not provide you with enough information to enable you to give an informed answer. The school of which she speaks is the new Windham High School, which is to open in the fall of 2009.

The debate, which was recently settled, was whether to open with just freshmen and sophomores the first year (a new grade would be added each year for the next two years resulting in a four year high school) thus allowing juniors and seniors to remain in their current school - Salem High or to have the school open with all four grades and have the juniors and seniors leave Salem High after two years and finish their high school years at Windham High School.

In the end, it was decided that it was in the best interest of the juniors and seniors to finish their high s chool career where it began, and open Windham High with two grades.

A freshman starting in September, 2009 will begin and complete his or her high school career at Windham High School.

A Reader

Dear Doctor,

You need a do-over on your March 23 column.

Obviously you don’t read the news portions of the Eagle-Tribune or you would have known when you read that letter that the writer was talking about Windham High School, scheduled to open in the fall of 2009.

It is scheduled to open with the freshman and sophomore classes, then the following year have freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, and the following year with all four grades. There are a multitude of reasons for this, cost and educational/social continuity for the students already at Salem High School probably being the two biggest.

As I said, with that background, if you reread your advice, you will see that it really doesn’t make much sense with the above scenario. Since a lot of people in Windham have this issue facing them, I think you should update your response.

Another Reader

Dear Readers,

Thanks for sending me your e mails.

Thanks also to the others I am not printing. Sounds like the powers that be made a good decision. Windham has very fine schools. It also sounds as if most of what I said was irrelevant–sort of.

I still think high schools should be reinvented.

Thanks again.
